Belgian PM Pledges Deeper Cooperation with China

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, underscoring Belgium's intention to strengthen bilateral relations and build greater mutual trust with China.

De Wever highlighted the historical bond between Belgium and China, pointing out the dynamic local-level exchanges that have flourished over the years. He further emphasized Belgium's key position as a gateway for Europe-China cooperation.

Reflecting on his previous visits to China, De Wever expressed his admiration for the country's impressive development milestones. Acknowledging the current complex geopolitical environment, he stressed the need to bolster communication and trust despite differing viewpoints.

De Wever also reaffirmed Belgium’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism and its support for a more autonomous European Union, expressing hope that the upcoming EU-China summit would generate positive outcomes. He made clear Belgium's steadfast position on the One-China policy, reiterating that this policy would remain unchanged.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, praised Belgium's significant role in both European integration and the broader China-EU relationship. As a founding member of the European Union and host to its headquarters, Belgium plays a crucial part in shaping EU-China ties.

Wang also acknowledged Belgium’s pragmatic approach to China, stating that China values this rational policy from the new Belgian government. He emphasized China's commitment to advancing traditional friendship with Belgium and deepening their all-encompassing partnership for continued collaboration.

Additionally, Wang reiterated China's focus on high-quality development and its ongoing push for greater openness. He invited more Belgian companies to explore opportunities in China while urging Belgium to ensure a fair, secure, and predictable environment for Chinese companies investing within its borders.
